Kid's Programs at 7 Owl Dojo

“The ultimate goal of Judo is to make people better members of society.”

Jigaro Kano, founder of Judo, Ju-Jitsu expert, and respected Japanese educator.

 AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00 pm to 4:45 pm

$69 per month

Children today live a vastly different world than their parents.  Computers, cell phones, a more mobile society, and urban growth have changed how and when families and friends interact.  Despite our best efforts as parents, each child may not have a firm civic foundation to take into adulthood.  May children fall through the cracks for a variety of reasons.  Poor moral judgment, becoming susceptible to peer pressure, or lack of conviction can lead a child into a spiraling decay of behavior.

PEACE, HONOR, AND RESPECT are the cornerstones of martial arts training at Seven Owl Dojo.  In each of our children’s martial arts classes, a child is taught these three critical character traits.  We will lay the foundation of continuing learning and self-image development for each child.  They can continue martial arts training, with its benefits, into adulthood.  We feel that long-term individual character development is the most important aspect of any martial arts training.  The courage to stand for one’s beliefs will help each child make the tough moral decisions needed to make society a better place.

SEVEN OWL DOJO offers these benefits:

Two 45 minute classes per week

A supportive learning environment

Maximizing Your Or Your Child's Studies In The Martial Arts

Making the decision to study any martial art is the easiest part of your pending journey to earn a coveted Black Belt.  But not many people make it.  This section is designed to help new and potential students avoid common pitfalls along the path.

Remember this is a journey, not a destination.  Respected Black Belts will state that they are serous students of the martial arts, continually learning new ideas and techniques.  Many people fail themselves when they reach Black Belt status, then discontinue training.  In periods estimated less than five year, they have lost most of their technical skills and attendant awareness.  The most important advice is Stay the Course and Never Miss Practice.

Helpful training tips include:

Take it easy.  Don’t push your body beyond your normal daily workout.  Minor soreness or an occasionally bruise are expected, but eventually, you should become accustomed to the physical activity.  Training injuries result in downtime and a reluctance to continue.

Don’t miss practice.  This quote, so common in Judo, really simplifies martial arts training.  After you miss one practice, it’s really easy to miss the next.  Before you know it, you’ve missed too much training to advance with your classmates.

Keep a positive attitude.  If you can learn just one new thing every class, then your time has not been wasted.  Don’t beat yourself up when you have a bad evening, everyone learns at different speeds.

Work with those better than you.  It’s a great time to learn and increase your skills.

Ways to waste your money with your child in the martial arts:

Pay the fees but don’t take your child to class.  He or she will never learn if they are not physically present.

Let your child dictate the days and times when they will attend class.  Sure, television and computer games are easier for a kid to do, but do they teach the life’s lessons that will be necessary as they age?

Don’t make the martial arts an important part of your child’s life.  Include praise for Dojo accomplishments at home or when communicating with relatives.  Children need to know they have done well and people are proud of them.

Don’t tell the instructor when your child has a problem or need.  Open communication between the parent and Sensei in critical.  No instructor can divine the need of every student.  Be open and honest about your child’s needs to they can be addressed.

Martial arts student checklist:

Be on time are ready to learn.

Keep a positive attitude about learning.

Keep your uniform clean and repaired.

If you need to miss practice, notify the instructor.

Use respect when addressing higher ranking belts.

Work with belt rankings both lower and higher than you.  Play to the lower belt’s level.

Keep cell phones off or on vibrate so that routine calls will not interrupt the class.

Don’t make excuses t justify missing class.  You are just hurting yourself.

Express concerns with the Sensei, not with other students.

Focus on your progress, not the progress of others.
